Hellman, Ann. "Examining Sexual Assault Survival of Adult Women: Responses, Mediators, and Current Theories." Journal of Forensic Nursing, vol. 10, no. 3, n.d., pp. 175-184. EBSCOhost, login.proxy.libraries.rutgers.edu/login?url=https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=edswsc&AN=000349674900010&site=eds-live.

(3) Summary. Provide a brief summary as to what the reading is about.

This reading is about the effects that sexual assault leaves on women and the common insight among these sexual assault survivors. This reading reviews case studies and examines post sexual assault research and find commonality among survivors. This reading speaks a lot on the perspective of survivors and the different effects they deal with in order to encourage the factor of regaining control. It goes into the long-term physical, mental, and emotional effects as well psychological conditions and behaviors that all include things such as anxiety, aggression, isolation, and poor self-esteem among these women.

(4) Author(s). Give some information on the author(s). What makes him/her knowledgeable on the topic?

Ann Hellman looked at and analyzed various research articles to compare effects of various survivors to get an accurate depiction of who and what has been affected. With a background in nursing, she is also the author of the journal, "Putting your nursing skills in the PINK: Focusing on women's health" where she digs deep into women's health, including mental and emotional. She is credible enough to realize the issues in women's health to link to the effects that come of sexual assaault.

(5) Key terms. Define at least two key terms or key concepts used in the piece.

survivor - a person who continues to function or prosper in spite of opposition, hardship, or setbacks”

sexual assault - a sexual act by a person or persons committed upon another without that person’s consent, a sexual act occurring between persons of the same or opposite sex, the existence or absence of a relationship between the perpetrator and survivor at the time of the sexual act, and a list of behaviors that comprise the sexual act

 (6) Quotes. Give three quotations pertaining to your topic, with page reference.

"Additional responses to and long-term effects of SA include avoidance coping, PTSD, depression, suidical ideation, and changes in religious perception" (page 176)

"Survivors experience psychosocial issues as manifested in relationship difficulties and the ability to trust themselves and others and experience intimacy issues (Herman, 2001)" (page 176)

"Survivors exhibited avoidance coping behaviors when they feared potential harm and negative social reactions and when they possessed a significant amount of self-blame for the assault (Patterson et al., 2009). Such avoidance coping behaviors led to greater PTSD symptoms (Ullman et al., 2007)" (page 178)

(7) Value. Explicitly explain how this material helps you to explore your research question.

This material helps because it compares many different articles and goes in depth about what type of effects affect sexual assault victims. It gives me different standpoints including coping behaviors of victims, something I did not think of to research or look further into.

  1. This looks very useful, but I think you need to plumb it further for useful analytic terms. Words like "survivor" and "sexual assault" are pretty well known. But I am curious about the term "mediators" in the title. And what about the "current theories"? Are there any terms naming those theories or that are used by those theoretical approaches to helping victims? Analytic terms are really important here, so pay attention. Once you find a good analytic term, you should use it to find other articles that discuss or use that specific term.
