Research Blog #9 - Argument and Counter-Argument

The effects of sexual assault on a student are more critical when in a college setting in regards to their mental, emotional, physical, and social health and academic standing, and the role the university plays in consequences is critical in adding onto these effects or lessening them. My research question is: What are the dire effects of sexual assault on a student in a college setting in regards to their mental, emotional, physical, and social health and academic standing, and what is the role of the university in adding onto to these effects or lessening them, in regards to their responsibility? I intend to answer this question by exploring the variety of effects that victims face after a sexual assault incident. I will explore these effects by researching court cases and personal testimonies, as well as researching statistics. Ten women were allegedly the victims of sexual assault while enrolled at Baylor University. They brought legal action against the university, primarily with claims under Title IX, as they were under the belief that BU’s policy discouraged them from reporting about their incident. The university also failed to adequately investigate each of the assaults. The women claimed that these assaults created a harassing educational environment and it deprived them of a normal college education, as well as other educational opportunities. All the while, the university moved to dismiss these claims. Each student was harassed by another student and the individual reported the assault to either university counseling, the university police department, medical personnel, or another student services office. Research Blog #7 - Frame

Understanding and incorporating cognitive information processing theory helps make sense of my project by going further into how cognitive events, such as a sexual assault incident, would process in the victim's mind. With sexual assault, a therapy called Cognitive Processing Therapy is used to address disorders that come about, such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The theory itself draws upon an information processing theory of PTSD where the information of the stressful event are stored in "fear networks" in the brain. Within these fear networks are memories of traumatic stimuli and the specific responses that go along with those meanings. After a sexual assault incident, a victim may feel stuck after their traumatic experience, but this therapy approach and theory as a whole is meant to address the reasons why they do feel stuck. This visual shows an obviously distraught woman which pictures the idea of effects of sexual assault perfectly. It shows a woman who is mentally and emotionally disturbed which is exactly what plays out after such an incident. It's significant because it explains something that words can't - it shows the negativity that victims face after sexual assault and it paints the picture of how many victims feel. Anyone can give you statistics on sexual assault, but to see the pain and discomfort on a victim's face paints a more serious picture of the effects.
